Historic District Homes Tour Description
This tour is a guided stroll through the historic districts along Park Avenue, Calhoun, and Gadsden Streets. We will admire and discuss the beautiful homes built there between 1840 and 1940. Since Tallahassee was first platted in 1824, these streets have been the preferred area for the weatlthy to build residential homes. It’s no wonder that Calhoun Street was given the nickname the “gold dust street” in the late 19th century. Ten homes we encounter pre-date the Civil War and have histories that mirror Tallahassee’s own tale. Along our way, you’ll hear stories about the people who lived there, learn about architectural details and updates to the homes, and gain insight into the history and development of these neighborhoods.
What Else You Should Know
This is a walking tour. Comfortable shoes and a water bottle are highly recommended.
This tour lasts approximately 2 hours without restrooms available.
Becuase these homes are privately owned by familes and businesses, we are unable to enter the structures during the tour.
We utilize the sidewalks along the downtown streets and the Chain of Parks. Most sidewalks are even and easily navigable. Please reach out to me in advance if you have special mobility needs so that I can accommodate you to the best of my ability.
