We will visit antebellum homes built by a freed black man, discuss Emancipation Day, Jim Crow laws, segregation in Tallahassee, and learn about Tallahassee&#8217;s bus boycott.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>This tour is limited to a small walking area in and around downtown Tallahassee.\u00a0 Black history in Tallahassee and Leon County runs deeper and stretches farther than the limits of this tour.\u00a0 Enslaved black people literally built many of the original buildings in early Tallahassee.\u00a0 Black men and women worked the land surrounding Tallahassee before and after statehood.\u00a0 They worked in the homes of \u201cprominent white leaders\u201d before and after the Civil War.\u00a0 African-Americans in Tallahassee established vibrant communities and organizations, perservering through the highs and lows of Tallahassee history. Due to the fact that much of our history has been preserved by white Tallahasseeans and historians, many stories and contributions of the African American communities have been lost.\u00a0 This tour recognizes its limitations in both space and in knowledge, and hopes to give voice and visibility to the all too often overlooked history of the African-American contribution.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>Comfortable shoes and a water bottle are recommended.
